The pilot study is a multidisciplinary and highly innovative research activity where researchers and PhD students collaborate to cope with the complex challenges of deep sea mining. It is initiated by NTNU Oceans. The goal is to develop new solutions for evaluation, exploration and extraction of sea-based minerals under societal responsibility for the environment and the international heritage of mankind.
The H2020 Blue Nodules research and innovation action (2016-2020) addresses the challenge of creating a viable and sustainable value chain to retrieve polymetallic nodules from the ocean floor. It will develop and test new highly-automated and sustainable technologies for deep-sea mining with minimal environmental pressures.
The Norwegian Research Council has granted NTNU a project to perform research on the exploration of minerals and metals on the Norwegian continental shelf. A number of Norwegian industry partners support the project, which will test out different underwater technologies to explore and extract these valuable resources in a sustainable way.
Offshore wind is expected to increase from 10 GW in 2015 to 150 GW in 2030. The project on "Integrated Design and Control of Offshore HVDC Networks" looks into how new technologies, such as HVDC multiterminal networks (MTDC), can coexist along traditional ones and be operated in an optimal way. Funding is provided by the Research Council of Norway through the Young Research Talent scheme, running from 2016 through 2019.
The Centre for Environment-friendly Energy Research on "Norwegian Research Centre for Offshore Wind Technology" was established to conduct concentrated, focused and long-term research in order to solve specific challenges in the field of energy and the environment. The centre is led by SINTEF Energy Research and runs from 2009 to 2017.
